My journey began with a degree in engineering, which taught me to simplify complexity, and lead me to a two-year postgraduate career in the avionics industry where I worked on airborne radar systems for fighter jets.
I quickly learned that I was far more interested in the commercial application of deep technology and explaining use cases in simple terms to non-technical customers which led me to the world of management consulting where I learned about the importance of the talent management and leadership functions in the fast-changing financial markets.
At the ripe age of 25 armed with lots of ideas, I decided to pursue my first entrepreneurial venture which was a combination of strategy consulting, team building and software product services into investment banks and fund managers.
A few years later and with my first exit under the belt, I decided to continue to build new ventures which provided advisory services and web-based technology into the financial services sector. Some succeeded and others did not but I continued to learn a huge amount: specifically, I learned a great deal about persistence and the importance of building ‘high-performance’ (meaning small teams that could deliver outsized returns) teams for my ventures and our clients. Into the early 2000s and armed with this expertise and a desire to work in alternative markets, as some of the most talented traders left banks to start up their own hedge funds, I built an offering that served new start-up hedge funds as well as traditional funds wanting to launch alternative investment strategies. At the same time, as I met highly talented newbie entrepreneurs, I helped to launch several new ventures in AI and voice technology.
In 2010 I moved to Singapore to learn about the Asian markets where I scouted for interesting new opportunities and then discovered blockchain technology. In 2014 I had already developed a vision for building future high-growth ventures that could serve industries and would be built upon blockchain rails. To this end, I built a team which took academic research from a research lab at NUS and created a set of blockchain based ventures including Zilliqa, the layer-1 blockchain.
Since that time, I have been steadily fulfilling the vision and today am proud to say that I have created a portfolio of ventures, helmed by outstanding CEOs who are starting to combine the power of blockchain, metaverse, gaming and music technologies to help luxury brands to enter a new age where digital and physical come together.
An obsessive ‘parallel and serial’ entrepreneur.
The greatest influencer in my life was undoubtedly my late father who gave me a passion for cars, music, and sartorial elegance. He taught me how to be brave, creative, action oriented and to lead an elegant life.
I have studied the lives of Andrew Carnegie, J.P.Morgan and Henry Ford who have driven entire industrial revolutions. Modern day icons are Steve Jobs and Bernard Arnault.
I listen to Bill Evans, the jazz legend, with a glass of fine red burgundy in hand. I am not very good at relaxing, I must admit.
Being asked by Jancis Robinson to write about blockchain and metaverse technology for the 5th edition of the Oxford Companion to Wine in 2023! The greatest honour for a wine collector.
